Philippine Bausch nació en Solingen, una pequeña ciudad alemana, el verano de 1940. Ya de muy pequeña quiso que la llamaran Pina. Sus padres regentaban un hotel restaurante en el que la niña, junto con sus dos hermanos mayores, ayudaba a pelar patatas y hacer las habitaciones. Le gustaba bailar y hacer gimnasia y participó en algunas funciones de ballet infantil. A los catorce años comenzó su formación como bailarina en la escuela Folkwang de Essen y tuvo como maestro a Kurt Jooss, un reconocido coreógrafo que fusionó la danza clásica y la moderna. En 1959 recibió una beca para ir a Nueva York y durante los tres años siguientes estudió y bailó en varias compañías importantes como el Metropolitan Opera Ballet. Regresó a Essen para unirse a la compañía de Jooss, de la que terminaría siendo directora y con la que conseguiría fama mundial. Al principio las coreografías de Pina toparon con cierta incomprensión y rechazo, pero lejos de desanimarse siguió adelante con sus proyectos, que acabaron conquistando al público y a grandes bailarines de todo el mundo. A lo largo de sus cuarenta años como coreógrafa, creó obras novedosas y sorprendentes. Recibió numerosos premios, entre ellos el Kioto, uno de los reconocimientos de arte más importantes. Al comienzo de la película de Pedro Almodóvar Hable con ella se la puede ver bailando y, dos años después de su muerte, Wim Wenders mostró su increíble talento creativo en la película Pina.
Philippine Bausch was born in Solingen, a small German town, in the summer of 1940. Even as a very young girl she wanted to be called Pina. Her parents ran a hotel restaurant where the girl, along with her two older brothers, helped peel potatoes and make the rooms. She liked to dance and do gymnastics and participated in some children's ballet performances. At the age of fourteen, she began her training as a dancer at the Folkwang school in Essen and was taught by Kurt Jooss, a renowned choreographer who fused classical and modern dance. In 1959 she received a scholarship to go to New York and for the next three years she studied and danced in various major companies such as the Metropolitan Opera Ballet. She returned to Essen to join Jooss' company, of which she would end up as director and with which she would achieve worldwide fame. At first, Pina's choreographies encountered some misunderstanding and rejection, but far from being discouraged, she continued with her projects, which ended up conquering the public and great dancers from all over the world. Throughout her forty years as a choreographer, she created new and surprising works. She received numerous awards, including the Kyoto, one of the most important art awards. At the beginning of Pedro Almodóvar's film Talk to Her she can be seen dancing, and two years after her death, Wim Wenders showed off his incredible creative talents in the film Pina.
