This great pirate is the object of admiration of a boy named Luffy, who has befriended Red-Haired Shanks, captain of a pirate gang that often moors its ship at the dock in his village. One day, Luffy eats a demon fruit, loot that Shanks's gang had obtained, and his body acquires the properties of rubber.
In return, he loses the ability to float in water and, therefore, to swim. While the gang is away from the village, Luffy provokes some mountain bandits, whose leader kidnaps him and throws him into the sea. While he struggles to avoid sinking, a sea beast comes to swallow him... but Shanks swims to the rescue! Luffy survives, but in return, the pirate loses his left arm.
Ten years after saying goodbye to Shanks and his crew, wearing the straw hat that the Red-Haired Man lent him as a distinctive symbol, Luffy sets sail alone. He begins his journey with the goal of becoming the pirate king!
